Germany Eliminates Tuition Fees At All Public Universities (International Students Attend For Free Too!)

Can someone please send America this memo?

As the student loan debt in the U.S. slides past the $1.2 trillion mark, Germany has eliminated tuition fees at all public universities. Yes, you read that correctly. Any student wishing to attend one of Germany’s many public universities can do so for free, no matter where they’re from. You’ll have to learn German, but it’s a really small price to pay for a free college education.

“We got rid of tuition fees because we do not want higher education which depends on the wealth of the parents,” Gabrielle Heinen-Kjajic, the minister for science and culture in Lower Saxony, said in a statement.

It’s important to note that Germany’s college culture is a little different from ours over here in the U.S. Their college campuses consist mostly of classroom buildings and libraries and nice, fancy dorms are rare. Most German college students live at home with their parents or independent apartment shares.

This move shows that America should consider making college a bit more affordable so that students don’t have to hop on a plane to Germany to get an education.
